Building my perfect bowl of Oatmeal

I love oatmeal, always have..but only lately in life have I acquired the knowledge to turn a regular bowl of oatmeal into something magical. Where every mouthful is an explosion of glorious flavor. Of course I can not forget to mention a sincere word of thanks to the Carb queen herself. If it wasn’t for her I would have never come to adding yogurt to my oatmeal…or having a jar of Chunky applesauce on the ready in the fridge.

I went through phases of yogurt/add-ons on top, yogurt/add-ons sandwiched in the middle. Granted it was all spectacular..but my current method; this way surpasses every other way I’ve tinkered with. Since I don’t exactly come close to reading up on all the blogs out there, this ‘newfound’ method is probably did and done. But, I don’t believe an influx of oatmeal anything can be a bad thing.


I cook 1/2 cup of rolled oats in 1 cup water with a pinch of salt. Toward the end, 1/4 tsp. vanilla is stirred in. Once removed from heat, half a mashed banana mixed in well. Then its this integral period known as the “cooling down”. For me its quite compulsory if I intend to derive maximum enjoyment. For best results do not cover completely; I go with the lid halfway on the saucepan. After getting some things done outside (around 15-20min.), I crack my knuckles (except not really) and get ready to work some magic.

1. Gently stir 1 tsp. coconut oil into the oatmeal. Do not mix thoroughly, you just want it slightly dispersed.

2. Plop on a few spoonfuls of yogurt, incorporating slightly.

3. Add a few spoonfuls of the applesauce (I am kinda obsessed with using Honeycrisp apples right now), and a generous sprinkling of cinnamon. Give it a little stir in. But for goodness sake don’t blend it into mush – very important!

4. Only now is everything transferred to my favorite “oatmeal bowl”. I don’t take pains to deposit it a specific way..I love it to be haphazardly layered. Sprinkled with a little more cinnamon crack.

5. Topped with a good drizzle of honey and a spoonful of crunchy peanut butter.

Coffee on the side = my favorite breakfast at the moment 🙂 .

  1. Mhmm love your cooking method! Mine is a little less sophisticated and involves microwaving oats with vanilla extract, half a sliced banana, and a ton of cinnamon. Then I top it with brown sugar which gets all melty!

    Love stirring in yogurt in too sometimes, though! Makes everything so creamy and delish!

    • Do try it at some point when you’ve got the time 🙂 . And that’s what makes oatmeal so universally loved – such an easy going grain to work with!
      Oooh brown sugar sounds like a good call!

  2. I love making fun new oatmeals! I made some this morning with Trader Joe’s Cookie Butter. It was so outstanding, I had to post it! Oatmeal is definitely the tofu of breakfast, it takes on any flavor perfectly 🙂

    • Cookie Butter!? Gahhh that sounds drool-worthy! Why do we not have Trader Joe’s here, ugh!
