Five Things Friday #8

Things don’t always go according to plan..in fact, sometimes they blow completely out of proportion. Like my laptop unexpectedly deciding on a holiday yesterday afternoon and crashing on me. As off now it’s in a coma and I’m stealing time borrowing use of my brother’s machine. Upon feeling rather frazzled after beating the crap out fiddling around with said unconscious close friend of mine, I accepted to missing out on Clare‘s get-together. But then a wave of sadness hit me, and we can’t have that right?! So here I am folks. In the skin 😀 .

5 THINGS I ATE/DRANK THIS WEEK

1. Grilled hake and veggiestakeout

Takeout after aaages! Gosh it was so good. The hake was absolutely melt-in-the-mouth perfection, and along with the veggies – seasoned simply yet sufficiently.

2. SHOPPING FUEL – Cafe mocha and an unpictured scone –because it paled in comparison to this heavenly potion.Cafe mocha

I will always stand true to my belief that shopping is seriously sapping. After walking the mall for a few hours; mealtime or not – I am ravenous. Why did I not try a Café mocha sooner?? Aptly described, this is a cross between a cappuccino and a hot chocolate. And it is blissful.

3. HUMMUS & TUNA

Lunch plate: Finn sesame/rye crackers, steamed broccoli, sweet potato fries roasted in olive oil+spices, mixed greens, rosa tomatoesveg plate

I’ve been loving on plates like these to dip into a generous mix of hummus and tuna. The contras of textures and flavors never fails to hit the spot.

4. OATMEAL BAKES WITH ICE CREAM

From the first trial; I was hookedoatmeal cookie dough a la mode

Which meant a daily dose of cookie dough and ice cream. Fine by me. Until…blasphemy; no more chocolate! Ahaaa, all is not lost..where there is a chocolate craving, there is a way…

A brownie spin on Amanda’s cookie dough bakechocolate brownie oatmeal

Cocoa powder in shining armor to the call of the distressed damsel 😉 . I simply subbed in 2 Tablespoons cocoa for the flour.

5. Scrambled eggs topped with avo, sweet potato roasted in olive oil, rosa tomatoes, mixed greensscrambled eggs

Can I take a moment to give this particular mix of salad greens some love? I was on a groove with a classical mix of spinach/rocket/watercress until my beloved Woolies store I frequent had it go MIA. I of course – and grudgingly so – branched out, and as a wise woman once said ; I found a new-to-me salad mix to fall in love with. Lambs lettuce, baby butter and watercress.

5 HUGE LIFE LESSONS LEARNT THIS WEEK

1. It is possible – to disagree with another human on almost every single matter, yet live -civilized- for a number of days together.

2. Dousing sweet potatoes in an over-generous coating of olive oil for roasting results in a tad too soggy texture.

3. Lot’so dairy does not cause me to break out.

4. So many coats in the world..none as comfy as the oversized one I stole from Dad’s wardrobe.

5. The squiggly line reprimanding made-up words no longer affects me.

5 THINGS THAT MADE ME FEEL GOOD

1. Allowing my emotions to come through.

2. An email that had me smiling, nodding (in agreement), gushing, and wanting to reach through the screen and give someone a hug.

3. That first sip of hot coffee after returning indoors in the early hours with a frozen nose and toes.

4. Gazing at my baby nephew asleep; such innocence! The epitome of tranquility.

5. Talking nonsense with siblings :p .

Five Things Friday #7

You know you really, really like something if when being away you suffer withdrawals. And boy did I yearn for the joy that eminates from this party. Thumbs up to one of our favorites – Clare 🙂

5 THINGS I ATE THIS WEEK

1. Baked sweet potato topped with tuna salad and avocado chunks. Mixed spinach salad.sweet potato- lunch

Guys guys guys! I literally passed away on the spot with happiness upon finding orange(!) sweet potatoes on my turf. The tuna salad comprised of: tuna (duh!), roasted red pepper hummus, mashed broccoli and black pepper. I tried them orange pots <- do you know some humans nickname “potatoes” that!? – dipped in nut butter and in savory dishes and have concluded that I’m not a fan of allowing them the honor to cohabit with my nut butter (white sweet potatoes excel in that department). But in savory meals? Yes, yes, yesss!

2. Toasted English muffin half with smooshed avo, baked butternut, eggs scrambled in coconut oil, steamed broccoli, spinach salad.random lunch plate

In yet another bid to please 101 million cravings at once, I resorted to placing random things on a plate and calling it a meal. Hit.the.spot. The addition of sliced onion and ground garlic to the eggs amped the taste up a hundred notches. And the obligatory coating of black pepper on everything of course!

3. pudding

What do you have for supper one night when your tastebuds are drawing a blank? Mum’s love in a bowl bread pudding  🙂

4. Eggs scrambled with onions and garlic in coconut oil, topped with sliced avo & black pepper. Mutigrain wrap, broccoli.scrambled eggs

So there was abit of a -scrambled- egg obsession going down this week.

5. muffin+ice cream

A freshly baked chocolate chip muffin topped with vanilla ice cream. Good stuff.

5 HUGE LIFE LESSONS LEARNT THIS WEEK

1. My brain contents will not – on its own will – dispose itself into a post. I’ve been having something playing on my mind for a few weeks now, but its kind of stuck in there. Until I’m able to say “out with it” – nothing doing.

2. I’m not as bad with kids as I thought. My evil reputation is crumbling 😉 .

3. A little while after entering the office I need a bathroom break. A sure indication that I’m due for a holiday from office-work. Yeah it’s astounding how I came to such a conclusion!

4. One of my biggest fears in life: running out of my favorite body moisturizer.

5. Doing several things at once does not make me more productive. It does drive me to lunacy however.

5 THINGS THAT MADE ME FEEL GOOD

1. Filling my lungs with sharp, fresh morning air.

sunrise

2. Applying hand cream that smells like honey.

happy hands

3. Daydreaming; so vividly it *almost* felt real! I don’t ever recall having the ability to daydream!..and it happens on the daily now.

4. After a day of mostly sitting I had a flow of restless energy running through me. I resolved it the perfect time to bust out my usual Pilates routine, but a little while on the mat and I knew it just wasn’t what I wanted at that time. I needed something that would get me feeling pumped and fired up. A few intervals of skipping (jump rope) in the late afternoon sunshine did the trick.

5. Tearing at the sweetly sad turn of events toward the closing chapters of a book ❤ .

Five Things Friday #6

Can someone please tell me where this month went? How can it be the end already!?  Good thing it’s Friday, so I’d rather not worry too much, and instead join  Clare‘s  party 🙂

5 THINGS I ATE THIS WEEK

1. Laura’s Custard porridge

Topped with crunchy Peanut butter and Berry jamCustardy oatmeal

I was familiar with adding egg whites to my oatmeal and loved how it pumped my favorite grain up, but I had silently acknowledged that I would never throw a whole egg into the mix.. because, how savory does that sound?  I remember when I first spotted the bowl of creamy goodness on Laura’s blog, with a promise of a recipe to come. Oh how I counted down the minutes hours! And then it calls for an egg, yolk and all. I did my best to look past that…at the outcome..creamy, custardy oatmeal. I was not disappointed. This made for a heavenly breakfast. I actually felt satisfied afterward 🙂 ! And that’s coming from a human with a hungry monster residing in the tum.

2. BREAD

Toasted wholewheat; berry jam and cheddar cheese. Smooshed avo, soft boiled egg, black pepper. Cukes, sautéed spinach.quick lunch

Curried chicken and cheddar toasted sandwich, veggieschicken/cheese toasted sandwich

For a while, bread had fallen off my radar due to a loss of memory craving it. This week marked its joyous return. Yeah I’m still all about the quick meals.

3. Mum’s salt&pepper chicken, steamed sweet potato clothed in paprika, mixed greens.Mum's chicken

Mum get’s the spices right. Every.single.time ❤

4. APPLE CRUMBLE PIE A LA MODE

apple crumble

I happen to be an “Apple crumble expert”. Not at making it, just to clarify. At eating it..and rating, I excel. The above was the best apple crumble pie to grace my tastebuds. Along with the creamiest vanilla bean ice-cream. Can I get a YUM!?

5. White basmati rice (cold), yogurt, cinnamon, banana, peanut butterrice snack bowl

She made me do it! I was adamant that I did not like rice (amusing how I ‘decided’ on this theory after not eating it for about 5 years), but after seeing it a few times on Spoons I was intrigued and enticed beyond words. Gosh, it gives a yogurt bowl such a lovely chewy texture..I am admittedly fan.

5 HUGE LIFE LESSONS LEARNT THIS WEEK

1. Almost everyone prefers to communicate through emails with business queries these day. And I still find a telephone call to clear matters up more precisely.

2. No matter how impatient, no matter how hangry..never eat an under-roasted potato.

3. I despise it when people jump to conclusions.

4. When I jump to conclusions it doesn’t seem half as bad.

5. I was lying to myself all along…I am not immune to feeling embarrassed.

5 THINGS THAT MADE ME FEEL GOOD

1. Seeing the emotional joy in a loved ones eyes on receiving a gift.

2. Mum/daughter coffee date.

3. Waking before my alarm, feeling refreshed.

4. Spending time bathing my pets. <- the heatwave has its good aspects!

5. Having something exceed my expectations.

Five Things Friday #5

Cue the bestest day of the week! Doesn’t Friday just hold so much promise and joy? The end of the working week, the beginning of the weekend, and the day that Clare throws a smashing good shinding 🙂

5 THINGS I ATE THIS WEEK

1. CCK’s Banana pancakes with chocolate chips thrown in, for breakfast one fine chilly morning. I broke into my first bag of spelt flour since…I was born. That’s almost 19 years! Crazy I tell you.

Topped with crunchy Peanut butterbanana pancakes You want to make this. You might not know it as yet, but I assure you.

banana pancakes You know the kind of breakfast that goes down in history? This was it. We’ve got every.single favorite flavor of mine going on. And don’t tell me I’m forgetting the coffee. That was taken care of on the side 😉 .

2. CCK’s Apple Pie pancakes for a weekday lunch.

Topped with crunchy Peanut butter and honeyApplie pie pancakes

Yup I was on what I’d call; a pancake groove.

3. Toasted wholewheat English muffin. Smooshed avo, soft-boiled egg, black pepper. Berry jam and cottage cheese. Veggiesdinner part2

This week I’m a little unmotivated to get fancy or complicated with savory meals. It always ends up being a “spur-of-the-moment”, “whatever jumps at me” situation.

4. A BREAKFAST WITHOUT BANANAS

Apple raisin oatmeal with yogurt stirred through post-cooking, topped with cinnamon and crunchy Peanut butterapple/raisin oatmeal

I failed to keep an eye on our banana supply this week. With a house full of monkeys it shouldn’t give me a hernia to come upon an empty banana basket when just yesterday there were a few. Yet every single time…I get a hernia. Figuratively speaking of course. The sight of a flawlessly perfect Starking apple in the fridge was a beautiful one to behold.

5. THIS

pastry cake

Remember how I hinted on how I’ve got Master bakers in my family. I wasn’t kidding. THIS just happens to be my obsession. I have no knowledge on it’s formal name but I can tell you that it’s heavenly. Soft sponge cake, with the bottom half enrobed in a rich, buttery pastry hiding a smidgen off apricot jam between. Enough to make me forget about mere formalities like what it’s called.

5 HUGE LIFE LESSONS LEARNT THIS WEEK

1. My idea of a savory meal is getting skewed. See meal no.3.

2. When you see someone suffering through their own doing with a matter you’ve been through yourself, you can lecture them as much as you want, but your words won’t be heeded until they fall themselves and decide to stand up on their own feet.

3. Everything has a way of happening all at once.

4. A mothers love is beyond understanding.

5. A simple chore can bring joy…if you live in the moment instead of just going through the motions.

5 THINGS THAT MADE ME FEEL GOOD

1. Dry body brushing.

2. Stretching after a short treadmill walk.

3. A week of feeling far removed from ED thoughts.

4. DIM (do it myself) facial.

5. Clutching a hot mug of coffee on a cold morning <3.

Five Things Friday #4

In my world (the world of aliens and fluffy socks), I have come to realize that I don’t ‘experience’ the month of March in my year. Just when you thought I couldn’t get any more peculiar huh? Hear me out. Since the financial year ends at the last day in February, it kind of feels like March is will be devoted to wrapping up the previous -financial- year. Pretty please nod along with me even if I am making zero sense! So I go through 11 months a year! And this current ‘period’ of my life is acknowledged as ‘Hectic’ 😉

Thanks to our charismatic lady Clare for hosting her feel-good party 🙂

5 THINGS I ATE THIS WEEK

1. MY 1st GREEN SMOOTHIE

I’ve been perusing blogs for centuries (-2 if we’re getting factly)…cast many an uninterested yet curious glance at countless green smoothies. Nevermind that! I wasn’t remotely attracted to smoothies at.all. My newly found smoothie obsession as off recently is still going strong, if not intensifying. But admittedly..I was slightly appalled at turning them green with a vegetable. I asked around a few times, and each reassurance that the green leaves didn’t destroy a smoothie’s palatability, served to waver my hesitance. I was at my weakest when I came upon Emma’s splendid concoction. That was it! It had to be done…

1st Green smoothie

I left out the chia seeds, since I didn’t and don’t ever get them. I held my breath when I threw in the spinach…and was super pleased with the outcome! Now I’m going to say that I don’t think the taste of the spinach is completely hidden…but to me it tasted like it enhanced the flavor of the smoothie. As in, without the foliage this smoothie wouldn’t be as yummilicious.

2. MEAT!!

Roast, braised green beans with potatoes, braised cabbage/peas, toast with smooshed avocado Roast

So for a good few years I was anti-red meat. There has been a few occurrences since taking up ‘freedom eating’, where I consumed abit of steak if it happened to be on a slice of pizza and there was no way around it. But I unceasingly refused to intentionally consume red meat..until 4 days ago. I never was a meat fan before..but the reason that I cut it out completely was an ED related issue. And this lunch that Mum cooked up was the perfectly incredible way to officially re-introduce it 🙂

3. BUTTERNUT SQUASH CINNAMON RAISIN BAKED OATMEAL

Drizzled with cashew nut butter, with yogurtButternut squash cinnamon raisin boatmeal

CCK’S boatmeal recipes are bomb! I followed this recipe to the T, using mashed butternut squash and throwing in a handful of raisins.

4. THE BEST TUNA SALAD I EVER MADE

Tuna salad, multigrain crackers, saladTuna salad

This earns the medal for the quickest, tastiest lunch this week. I was starvin’ marvin’ and randomly threw together – take note guys..you are going to want to try this (if you haven’t already 😉 ) – 1/3 of a smooshed avocado, 1-2 spoonfuls of mashed butternut squash, a sachet of Black pepper & Lime Tuna and 2 florets of chopped well-cooked broccoli.

5. OREO MOUSSE

Oreo mousse

Oreos on their lonesome is on the bottom of my list of favorites..but renovate them into a dessert? Yes please.

5 HUGE LIFE LESSONS LEARNT THIS WEEK

1. The power was down for most of yesterday. Which meant the internet was unconsious…and of course my phone conveniently dies on me just then…aaand I survived. I don’t know how! But it turns out, my life does not depend on technology.

2.  The cuter and tinier you are, the more mischief you can cause without suffering consequences. Toddlers get it good!

3.  It takes more energy to try to stop myself from worrying about every.single.thing, that it does to just worry.

4.  Maize goes straight to the brain and causes lunacy.

5.  For someone who regards promptness as extremely important..I am astonishingly late with various life stages.

5 THINGS THAT MADE ME FEEL GOOD

1. Nights of blissfully sound sleep…

2. As a result, feeling more energized than I have in the past few weeks.

3. A marvelously productive work day.

4. Getting my veggies in because I legit craved them.

5. Receiving encouragement from family members on a significant decision.

Five Things Friday #3

Ohmygoose it’s Friday *happy dance*! This week whizzed by (they seem to be doing that lately)… linking up with the lovely lady Clare at http://fitting-it-all-in.com

5 THINGS I’VE BEEN EATING THIS WEEK

1. ALL THE SMOOTHIES!!!

I was never a smoothie/milkshake person. Three reasons a) not a fan of drinking my calories b) I dreaded working with our huge barbell of a blender (so.heavy). Ok that was only 2. But potent enough to keep me from actually trying. Well as off 7 days ago..my world changed. I discovered one of those pleasant mini blenders laying sadly in storage – Mum received as a gift a few months back – that I was ignorant of. And the persuasive Amanda developed a smoothie recipe  that includes all my favorite things, and it was practically haunting me into trying it.

used peanut butterchocolate smoothie

In the days to follow:

frozen mango + milk + cashew butter + cinnamonmango smoothie

frozen peach + frozen mango + milk + cashew butter + cinnamonmango/peach smoothie

The non chocolate ones were refreshingly tasty, but I quickly fell back onto my first love!

2. MUM’S COOKING

Mum's chicken

Mum gets the flavor spot-on with her chicken…

macaroniAnd whips up the best mac dish in coconut oil.

I’m doing quite well with going against ED rules and enjoying meals that’s made by Mum..with love.

3. PUDDING

Bread pudding

Bread pudding that is! So simple..so good. And no one makes it better than Mum ❤

4. CREAM CHEESE

smoked salmon cream cheese

Without fail, each time I would walk by the cheese section I would glance at the inviting tubs of cream cheese. A few times I hesitantly picked it up, scrutinised the label..then hurriedly put it back, a quiet voice reassuring myself that I’m better off with my ‘safe’ cottage cheese. I mean, with cream cheese I’d have to be wary of serving sizes and such jazz. Where with its distant fat-free cousin, I can relax. But the other day I was particularly enticed to experience living on the edge, and viciously plonked a tub at the till point before I could back out. A wise move. I’ve been loving this..on toast/crackers, smeared on roasted butternut and soon I’ll take the plunge and have it on a spoon. It’s that good.

5. OATMEAL – with coconut milk stirred in post-cooking

layered with applesauce and topped with cinnamon, cashew butter + honeyoatmeal

I have coconut milk in the fridge that needs using up, and I had this lightbulb moment on Tuesday morning to stir some into my oats once the cooking process was completed and I removed it from the stove. Love the creamy texture and hint of coconut..so you best believe there was repeat action for the rest of the week.

5 HUGE LIFE LESSONS LEARNT THIS WEEK

1. Dealing with an inconsiderate human “bean” in the AM sets a bad tone for the day.

2.  In a split second..your life can change forever.

3.  Do not attempt to jog from point A to point B in bedroom slippers. Ever.

4. Multi-tasking can work against you when taken to extremes. Brushing teeth, while walking to a neighbour – in pajamas – to return something, accidentally carrying the clothes I was planning to wear over my shoulder.

5. If by chance you mistakenly apply foot lotion on your hands..said hands will not transform into feet.

5 THINGS THAT MADE ME FEEL GOOD

1. Getting absorbed in a fabulous book.

2. Listening to my tired body instead of trying to push myself to get some exercise.

3. Cooler weather.

4. Yesterday’s Thinking Out Loud party. I only managed to squeeze in a few reads..but it was enough to touch into the inner recesses of my heart, to inspire and uplift me.

5. Expressing my feelings.

Let’s hear it for the weekend :) !

Five Things Friday #2

Friday’s are extra busy for me. Enjoyably so, but in way where if I don’t have a post planned out..it’s not happening. Which is downright sad because I love linking up with the inspiring Clare at http://fitting-it-all-in.com

five-things-friday

5 THINGS I’VE BEEN EATING THIS WEEK

1. CHOCOLATE EGGY OATS

with yogurt, macadamia nut butter, berry jamchocolate eggy oats

The first time I tried eggy oats I wasn’t a big fan. But in my heart of hearts I knew I needed to give it another chance. Turns out I love the stuff to the point of borderline obsession…on condition that I allow it to cool completely before eating. Me and hot eggy oats don’t get along.

 2. CHOCOLATE

Lindt coconut

hazelnut

Between working my way through two of my 1.5 billion favorites, I’d say chocolate was its own food group.

3. COLD MIDDAY MEALS

tuna/crackers

When the heat is at its peak, cold lunches have been going down really well. A recycled pic over here but this is what it looks like..just doing my part in being green 😉

4. TRIFLE

Mum's trifle

A bad photo of a really good dessert! Mum has been whipping up these beauties quite regularly these days…In the past -8 days I’ve had it 3 times already 🙂

5. PANCAKES MASQUERADING AS…SOMETHING ELSE

topped with macadamia nut butter and honeypancake bake

Alright so I only made this yesterday. But it was so good I just know that I’ll be having it every day often. I’ve seen pancake batter getting baked up by Robyn and Miss Polkadot and I’ve been dyyying to try it. Except I had no idea how to go about..I could blow up the oven, if not the entire kitchen! Turns out I’m quite the culinary master, and after forgetting about it for a good 30 min. I ran screaming to the oven certain it was burnt to a crisp…but lo and behold, it was perfect. I love the dense, fudgy texture!

5 HUGE LIFE LESSONS LEARNT THIS WEEK

1. It’s much easier to do what’s ‘right’ and follow my brain, than trying to figure out the direction my heart would like to take.

2.  People come, people go..life carries on.

3.  I’m a creature of contradiction..but it is totally a genuine thing as it is only because I fail to ‘understand’ myself.

4. The moment you make a mental note that you won’t eat dessert because you’re full and you’ve eaten enough sweets for the day; you suddenly start craving it like crazy.

5. The age-old saying “You have to be cruel to be kind” is true..well to an extent.

5 THINGS THAT MADE ME FEEL GOOD

1. An incredible gift from someone near and dear ❤

2. All the cocoa in my system 😉

3. Watching a soft sunset while hanging around at the stables. It was so amazingly ‘soft’ for a summer’s day..pinkish orange with tinges of purple. I did take a photo..only to delete it in disgust. While I don’t mind my crappy photos undermining the look of my meals, there is no way I can do that to a magical sunset.

4. Getting lots of downtime in the form of reading. Oh to get lost in a book..amazing!

5. Doing some Pilates on a day that I didn’t feel like complete ludjah i.e exhausted beyond words.

Wishing you a stupendously marvelous weekend!..that hopefully includes chocolate and pancakes 🙂
